MacLean Witches on Mull

Did you know that there were MacLean witches on the Island of Mull?

The Island of Mull has long been known as the home of witches, and Mull is often called "The Island of Gloom". These witches were members of Clan MacLean, and they were loyal to the chief of the clan.

Legends on Mull tell us that these witches were very powerful. They used clay or wax images of the person they wished to cast a spell upon, then pricked or otherwise hurt these images to torment their victims.

In 1588, the most powerful of the witches lived on Ben More. When she learned that the Spanish Armada was about to attack England, she was determined to prevent the invasion and destroy the armada.

When the armada entered English waters, she cast a spell to create a powerful storm at sea. She then took a clay model of a ship to the shore, and placed it in the water. She kept swirling it around, and sank it over and over. Every time the model sank, one of the ships of the Spanish armada also sank, or so the legend says.
